Pedestal basins are a staple of many bathrooms and embody the traditional style of a wall-fitted basin fixed to
a pedestal, which is attached to the floor and conceals the plumbing, keeping everything looking neat and tidy.
If you’re installing a basin then it’s always best to hire a professional tradesperson to do the work, but for
information on what to expect during the process, we’ve included an overview below on the tools required and the
various steps needed to complete the installation.
When it comes to fitting a pedestal basin, you’ll need the following:
Pedestal
Basin
Basin waste
Silicone sealant
Fixings
Taps
Tools required:
Tape measure
Spirit Level
Scredrivers
Pencil
Adjustable wrench and pipe wrench

Step-by-step pedestal basin fitting guide
Step one
Use the spirit level to locate the central position on both the wall and floor. Mark this with a
pencil.
Step two
Position the pedestal and basin against the wall to check the placing is correct and then use the
pencil to draw an
outline of the basin on the wall.
Pencil the position of the bolt holes onto the wall by placing the basin on the pedestal to gauge
where it will go (if the pedestal is one which bolts to the floor, then also mark out the bolt
positions for this).
Step five
Drill the holes for the bolts (checking to ensure that there are no nearby wires or pipes).

Step six
Insert the wall plugs and bolts to fix the basin onto the wall, then measure the waste pipe and
cut this to the
correct size, before fitting the waste trap (either a P-trap for wall-mounted wastes or a straight
trap for floor waste
pipes).
Step seven
Once the waste pipe is fitted, the hot and cold-water inlets can be connected and the water supply
switched on.
Step eight
Position the pedestal and then complete the installation by sealing the joins with silicone sealant.

Pick your perfect pedestal basin at Bathshack
At Bathshack we supply a range of
pedestal basins,
which remain the most popular style of basin throughout the UK and Ireland. With a variety of sizes and
basin shapes available, you can find something which will suit your
requirements and complement your space for a great price. This includes both one and two-tap basins, along
with those which are square, rectangular, or oval-shaped.
We also stock semi-pedestal basins, where the pedestal is half the size of the full pedestal style
and attached to the
wall-mounted basin.
These offer a more compact variation and give your bathroom sink an elegant floating look, which can
add charm and
appeal to the space, while still discreetly concealing the waste and pipes.
Made from high-quality materials, all our pedestal basins are extremely robust and will last long
into the future, for
your peace of mind. With both modern and more traditional styles available, there’s also something
to suit all tastes
and styles of décor, making them a versatile choice for any bathroom.
