Underlay
What is underlay?
Simply put, Underlay is a layer that’s fitted on top of a sub-floor and underneath Solid, Engineered Wood or Laminate Flooring. Normally made from sponge rubber, foam, felt, or crumb, it’s a great way of making the most of your new flooring in a variety of ways.
It levels the floor
This is essential when laying a wooden or laminate floor. It is vital that your flooring is exactly level, as even the smallest bumps and divots can result in unsightly gaps between planks. Not only does this look messy, it’s also a haven for dust and dirt which can accumulate over time. Uneven floors also creak underfoot, reducing its lifespan and creating an unpleasant noise.
Underlay is insulating
Underlay absorbs and muffles the sounds of footsteps over the floor’s surface, reducing noise by up to 50%. It also acts as a thermal insulator, helping to keep the whole house warm. The insulating properties of Underlay also cushions your feet for a more comfortable feeling underfoot.
More durable, hygienic flooring
Underlay makes floors last longer. Over many years, the continual pounding of feet on the floor results in flattening, deformation and cracking. By acting as a physical cushion and reducing movement between planks, an Underlay can drastically increase the lifespan of your floor. It even improves your home’s hygiene; by helping a floor fit together properly, it prevents moisture and dirt from seeping between the cracks and creates a more uniform surface which makes vacuuming and mopping easier.
