Can I put vinyl flooring over tiles

If you’re renovating your kitchen or bathroom and have existing tile flooring, then you won’t be alone in wondering whether you can cover them up or if you need to get rid before you lay a new vinyl floor. In a nutshell, when it comes to installing vinyl flooring in your home then the short answer is yes, you can lay this over a tile floor, saving you both time and money.

If you have ceramic or stone tiles then there should be no issue in covering them with a vinyl floor – the other great thing about vinyl is that, if you’re a keen DIY-er or self-builder, then you can easily install it yourself.

Before you get stuck in, however, there are a few things to consider before tackling the job, so we’ve gathered together some top tips below. Then, once you’re happy with the prep work, we have some quality vinyl flooring suggestions.

Vinyl flooring is extremely versatile and comes in various designs, such as wood-effect, like Pergo’s Modern Coffee Oak flooring above.

Things to consider before installing a vinyl floor

  • Fix any cracked or broken tiles before laying a new vinyl floor on top, otherwise this will make it more difficult to lay the vinyl securely.
  • Laying vinyl over tile floors with narrower grout lines is best as deep or wide grout joints can cause depressions in the vinyl when this is laid over the top. In this case, it would be best to install an underlayment on top of the tiles to smooth out and flatten the surface of the floor before covering it with vinyl.
  • Check what height the floor will be before laying your new vinyl, in case putting this on top of your existing tiles elevates it too much, as this can impact how your furniture sits on top and affect other structures within the room.

Vinyl flooring to suit any space

At Bathshack, we supply a range of high-quality vinyl flooring which is suitable for both kitchen and bathroom floors, as well as other areas within the home. Our brand of choice is Pergo, industry leaders and manufacturers of hardwearing vinyl floors that will last you long into the future.

Extremely versatile and available in different effects, such as wood, stone and tile, vinyl is an inspired choice for any home and is also a very cost-effective choice. If you want to create a luxury-look floor for less – and enjoy longevity and easy maintenance alongside the aesthetics – then vinyl is the way to go.

Key benefits of vinyl flooring include:

  • 100% Waterproof – ideal for bathrooms and kitchens where water is abundant and spills often likely!
  • Hardwearing – durability is key for high-traffic areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and hallways, so vinyl is great, as it’s long-lasting and capable of withstanding lots of footfall.

  • ‘Rigid Click’ feature – Pergo vinyl flooring is very easy to install as it just clicks into place without the need for adhesives.
  • Versatility – vinyl comes in various different effects, so you can create the look you want – be it wood, tile or otherwise – without the hefty price tag.

A few of our favourite vinyl floor designs

If you want a chic, modern vinyl floor which ties in with the ongoing black trend, then the Pergo Premium Click Vinyl Flooring Black Scivaro Slate is ideal. With the authentic look of black slate, but without the enhanced cost or added upkeep, this floor will add instant style to your home and work well with a range of décor.

Simply click and lock the vinyl into place and you have a water-resistant, easy to maintain floor which will stand up to the footfall of a busy home while also being softer to the touch than actual slate.

Italian Marble vinyl flooring will instantly elevate your kitchen or bathroom.

Another elegant-looking vinyl floor which will set you back a lot less than the material it mirrors is marble-effect vinyl. The Pergo Premium Click Vinyl Flooring in Italian Marble will give you the luxury of premium Italian marble and elevate your bathroom or kitchen with its simple classic style. The white marble with its subtle dark veining will easily complement a range of décor and also has a natural, soothing vibe.

Soft underfoot and warmer to the touch than real marble, this floor is also compatible with underfloor heating, so is a practical and stylish choice.

If rustic is more your vibe, however, then why not consider a wood-effect vinyl floor, such as the Pergo Premium Click Vinyl Flooring in Classic Nature Oak.

Rendered in a traditional oak timber design, you can enjoy all the benefits of a real wooden floor without the worry of warping. Again, this floor is compatible with underfloor heating, while the warm oak tone will create a timeless look that won’t date.

If you’d prefer a more contemporary wood-effect vinyl floor, however, then another great choice is the Pergo Premium Click Vinyl Flooring in Grey Heritage Oak.

Pergo Premium Click Vinyl Flooring in Classic Nature Oak.

With a beautiful smoky-grey tone, this style once again has an authentic natural appearance and gives you the very real qualities of a wooden floor but with all the benefits of vinyl. Compatible with various colour palettes this is a versatile vinyl and will give your home a more contemporary edge over the Classic Nature Oak.

For a contemporary rustic look, why not try the Grey Heritage Oak design.

Whichever style you go for, when it comes to vinyl flooring, installing it couldn’t be easier – and you can create a premium look for less thanks to the versatility of this hardwearing material.

There’s a reason why vinyl continues to be a popular choice for flooring and once you have it in your home, you might just wonder why you didn’t before …
