8 Helpful Questions to Ask Any Bathroom Retailer: So You Feel Confident and Informed
A bathroom is one of the biggest purchases you'll make for your home, so it's worth taking a little extra time before you place your order. Many products are made to order, deliveries often arrive on pallets rather than through the post, and once you've booked an installer, timing matters. That's why the experience you have with your retailer can be just as important as the products themselves.
A little preparation goes a long way. Asking a few key questions before you buy can help you understand delivery times, stock availability, returns and what happens if something doesn't go to plan. It gives you confidence that you're making the right decision, wherever you choose to shop.
Below are the eight questions we believe every customer should ask before ordering a bathroom. We've answered each one honestly, explaining how we handle things at Bathshack, not because we expect you to take our word for it, but because clear, practical answers are the best way to help you buy with confidence.
1. What happens if my order arrives damaged or wrong?
This is the question most people only think to ask after the pallet's already been unwrapped. By then it can be too late.
Ask specifically: how long do I have to report a problem, and do I need photos? If the answer is vague, that's worth noting. Our own policy gives you 48 hours from arrival to check everything thoroughly and report damage or a wrong item: after that window, it becomes genuinely hard to establish how the damage happened, which can stand between you and a free replacement. Worth knowing too: we sometimes ship in supplier-branded packaging, so a box that doesn't say "Bathshack" on it isn't automatically the wrong item: check what's inside before you assume an error.
You can see the difference a clear process makes in how these things actually play out. One customer described a claim handled by a service agent called Jack L. as smooth from the start: "No quibble seeing my photos were taken upon delivery... I received a new mirror within 2 days." That's what asking this question upfront is buying you.
2. Can I actually see and touch this before I buy it?
If you're buying a full suite, a bath, or tiles for a whole room, ask whether there's a showroom you can visit, and if not, whether samples are available. We operate 13 showrooms across the UK and Ireland, from Antrim to Cork, Dublin to Galway, precisely because some decisions genuinely need to be made in person. A Cork customer put it simply after a showroom visit: the assistant was "very helpful" and "not pushy," got everything sorted, and the order arrived quickly, "would definitely recommend and will definitely be a returning customer."
3. What's the real delivery timeframe, and what happens if it's delayed or out of stock?
"As soon as possible" isn't an answer. Ask for working days, ask what courier they use, and ask what happens if nobody's in when it arrives.
Here's what specific looks like: we aim to dispatch within 2-5 working days of order, and once dispatched, Northern Ireland orders typically arrive the next working day, Republic of Ireland within 1-3 working days, and UK mainland within 3-4. Some couriers contact you beforehand to agree a suitable day, and because bathroom goods often travel on a pallet, delivery is kerbside only. The driver won't carry it into the house. Full detail, including free delivery thresholds, is on our delivery information page. If a retailer can't give you numbers this concrete, ask why.
4. What's your returns policy, and what CAN'T be returned?
Most returns policies sound generous until you read the exclusions, and the exclusions are exactly what catch people out.
Ask directly: are made-to-order items covered? What about grout, silicone, adhesive? Our returns policy gives you 30 days, provided items are in original, resaleable packaging and you cover the return courier cost. But made-to-order items can't be returned or cancelled unless they arrive damaged, and consumables like adhesives, grouts and silicones are never returnable. Returns also need to go to our Antrim warehouse rather than a showroom counter. None of that is unusual for the industry, but you want to know it before you order the bespoke vanity unit, not after.
5. Will I keep dealing with the same person, or start from zero every time I call?
Continuity of contact is what actually stops a small hiccup turning into a big one, because someone who already knows your order doesn't need it explained twice.
Ask whether you'll have a named point of contact if something needs following up. It's a pattern that shows up again and again in how our own team handles things: Jack L. kept a customer updated through a supplier delay and arranged quicker delivery to meet an installation deadline; Ewan "went out of his way to arrange a timely replacement" after a fault; Abu Jafour was praised by one customer as so knowledgeable "he could recite the website alphabetically, every make, model, size, price." That kind of familiarity isn't an accident. It's what you're checking for when you ask this question. You can read more of these in our customer reviews.
6. Do you support trade accounts if I'm using a tiler or installer?
If you've hired a tradesperson to fit your bathroom, this question isn't just for them. It affects how smoothly your whole job runs, from ordering to delivery scheduling to who's chasing what if something's short.
Ask whether the retailer runs a proper trade account programme, separate from a standard retail checkout. A tiler or installer who's ordering on your behalf will move faster, and hit fewer snags, if the retailer already has a process built for that relationship.
7. What happens years later if a part breaks or goes missing?
Warranties cover faults. They don't always cover the practical problem of a shower valve part going obsolete five years in.
Ask what happens after the warranty ends. Will the retailer still help you track down a spare, or are you on your own? One of our own customers needed a replacement part for a bathroom fitted seven years earlier, and a member of our team, Ian, went back to the original supplier to track it down, with the customer noting that the service and care goes on long past the original job."
8. Can you help me plan the whole room, not just sell me one item?
If you're doing more than a single swap-out, a full re-fit, a layout change, a room built around new plumbing, you need a retailer who can think about the whole space, not just ring through a basin.
Ask whether design advice is available, and whether it costs anything to find out. We offer a free design consultation, in showroom, online or by phone, alongside a Bathroom Renovation Guide for anyone planning a full room from scratch. Layout, tiling, lighting, storage: the mistakes that cost the most to fix are almost always the ones made at the planning stage, before a single tile's been ordered.
Ask the questions, then trust the answers
None of these eight questions are difficult, and none of them should feel like an imposition to any retailer worth ordering from. If you ask them and get straight, specific answers, you've found somewhere worth spending your money. If you get vague reassurance instead, that's information too.
If you'd like to run through any of this against your own project, whether that's a single swap-out or a full renovation, our friendly team is happy to talk it through. Drop into one of our showrooms, call, use the online chat, or get in touch through our contact page, and just let us know what you're planning.
