Jonathon at LOVE Energy Savings gave us some great tips and facts about savings on heating, so without further delay let’s see what he had to say!

How to Stop Overusing Your Heating

During the winter months you might be tempted to turn up the heating when you get cold but you’d be much better off putting on another layer. Wearing a jumper around the house will not only let you keep your heating bill down but reduce your carbon footprint.

If you know you’re just going to be relaxing in the lounge for most of the night, it doesn’t make sense to heat the whole house. Try turning the radiators off in the rooms you’re not using and keeping the doors in your house closed; you’ll avoid chilling drafts as well as reducing your energy bill.

Affordable Ways to Stay Warm in Winter

Investing in your home is a great way to save money and keep warm during winter, the summer is an ideal time to put the effort it.

There are plenty of cheap and easy ways to keep your house warm. Plugging up any holes or cracks in doors or windows you’ll help keep warm air inside your house and keep out cold drafts. Eco-friendly products such as Biomass Boilers can dramatically reduce heating costs, as well as gain the benefit of government payments for the use of approved fuels such as wood pellets! Placing foil behind your radiators will help reflect the heat back into your home as will investing in double glazed windows.

Which Heating Method Is The Cheapest?

Electricity, especially electric fan heaters, is generally the most expensive way of heating your home. The best way to heat your home and save money is through central heating and modern insulation.

The Benefits of Insulation

There are loads of places around the house you can insulate. Roof and loft insulation is arguably the most important for houses that don’t have any. The cost of installation is around £200-£300 for the average household and it could save you up to £180 per year, so within two years you should see the financial benefits. What’s more it will reduce your carbon footprint by around 730kg.

Solid Wall insulation is a much bigger undertaking. It can cost anywhere between £5000 to £15,000 and should save you around £500 per year so this is only a good idea if you don’t intend to move for a long time. The upside of this however is that you should reduce your carbon footprint by just under 2 tonnes every year.

Other areas to insulate which may be cheaper are the floors, windows, boiler tanks, doors, pipes and radiators, as well as caulking up any minor holes around the house. Insulating just a few of these areas could add up to significant savings on your energy bills.
